The peony flower has tuberous roots and is a native species in Asia, Mediterranean Europe and North America. Of the thirty existing varieties, the Chinese peony is the most famous, with its round, full head. The ‘Paeonia lactiflora’ variety was introduced in Europe at the end of the 18th century, and gave birth to numerous varieties with single or double flowers.
