How to take care of a Camellia
- Camellias are easy to maintain and will thrive happily in a plant pot on a balcony or terrace or planted directly in a flower-bed. They can be kept inside during their flowering period as long as you follow a few essential rules. Place them in the light, close to a window or in a conservatory, taking care to keep the temperature below 17°C. Spray the leaves with room temperature water two or three times a week. Once the flowering period is over, it is preferable to put the camellia outside in a pot or directly in the ground.
In a pot: Choose a sufficiently large pot of a sufficient diameter, pierce the base and fill the pot with a mixture of potting compost and horticultural compost or growing mix. Camellias can be kept in the same pot for 2 or 3 years but the pot must be changed regularly. Water it regularly in hot weather to keep the earth damp, but do not leave any excess water to stagnate around the roots.
- Outside: Camellias thrives in most conditions if protected from strong winds and cold, in shade, half-shade or dappled sun. The don't like chalky soil, so opt for for a mixture of potting soil, growing mix and peat. water generously after planting then regularly for the first year, especially in very hot weather, to help the roots form. Remember to protect your plant from the cold in winter.
